Haley's Heart

The Haley Sue Foundation

Some legacies are not measured by the years someone lived, but by the lives they continue to touch long after they’re gone. That is the heart behind the Haley Sue Foundation, a Franklin-based nonprofit established to honor the life of Haley Sue Pearson, whose unwavering commitment to serving others inspired everyone around her. As Haley’s mother, Pam Pearson, remembers, her family was faced with a choice: “allow [Haley’s] story to end on December 6th” or “continue the work she had already started during her short twenty-five years.” Rather than allowing grief to become the end of her story, Haley’s family transformed it into a mission dedicated to helping others live with the same spirit of kindness that defined her life.

Haley Sue, according to Pam, “believed that changing the world didn’t require a grand gesture; it happened one person, one act of kindness and one life at a time.” The foundation’s mission is broad in scope but deeply personal in purpose: supporting people who lack resources, investing in underserved children and strengthening communities through intentional acts of service. Pam says that, at its core, the foundation aims to “[meet] tangible needs and create opportunities that change lives.” Every effort of the foundation reflects Haley’s belief that meaningful change begins with simply showing up for people.

When the foundation embarks on a new initiative or decision, they ask, “Is this something Haley would do?” They move forward from there. Haley’s heart beats through this foundation, and her legacy is honored in every choice made.

Education remains a cornerstone of the foundation’s work. Haley, according to Pam, believed “every young person deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams,” and the foundation aims to break down the financial barriers that might stand in the way. The scholarships, uniquely, are not based on grades alone. They look beyond the numbers to see the person behind them. Passion is carried forward by awarding scholarships to students whose character, leadership and desire to make a difference reflect the values that Haley embodied. For Pam, presenting these scholarships is an “emotional experience,” reminding her that “Haley’s life continues to have an impact.” Affecting the lives of these young people has what Pam calls a “ripple effect,” as making a difference inspires others to make a difference.

One of the organization’s signature initiatives is the Centennial High School Scholarship. Haley Sue graduated from Centennial, class of 2014, and her legacy lives through the lives of these students. For submission, students are asked to record a three-to-five-minute video that shares how they are making a difference in their school or community. The purpose of a video rather than an essay, Pam says, is to “see [the] heart” of the student, the most essential element of their character.

The Haley Sue Foundation’s Rise UP Sibling Scholarship is a program created and led by Haley’s siblings, Hayden and Hadley Pearson. Knowing firsthand the hardship of losing a sibling, Hayden and Hadley aim to encourage other young people on the same difficult journey through grief. Applications for the scholarship place the young person’s story at the center, highlighting their ability to rise from grief to make a difference in the lives of those around them. As Pam shares, the applicants explain how they have chosen to “honor their sibling by serving others,” and the resilience they demonstrate is “incredibly inspiring.” Pam notes that such stories remind her that “while grief never truly goes away, it can be transformed into purpose.” With every application, Pam sees students “[choosing] hope over despair and service over isolation,” which is exactly why it exists. The Rise UP Sibling Scholarship is awarded twice a year and is open to submissions nationwide.

In a world often searching for extraordinary solutions, the Haley Sue Foundation serves as a reminder that extraordinary change is often built through ordinary acts of compassion. It is Pam’s hope that “when people hear Haley’s name, they think of compassion, generosity and a love for others.” By turning one family’s loss into a movement of hope, the foundation continues to prove that a life dedicated to loving others never truly ends; it simply finds new ways to shine.
