SkyDog: The Shoals Experience

Few places embody such a rich, authentic spirit like Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Long before visitors began flooding the streets of the city, the stories existed. At FAME Studios in the Shoals, one sincerely wishes “the walls could talk,” as they’ve stood witness to the writing and recording of songs that changed music history forever.

Nestled along the banks of the Tennessee River, the small town earned an outsized place in music history in the 1960s and 1970s, becoming the unlikely birthplace of countless recordings that would shape generations. This summer, Williamson County residents will have the opportunity to experience a piece of that legacy firsthand as SkyDog brings the undeniable sound and soul of Muscle Shoals to the stage. More than just a concert, the three-day festival is a celebration of the musicians and recording studios that transformed a small Alabama river town into one of the world's most influential music destinations. Rodney has endearingly described the festival as a “cruise ship on land,” with not only music but also southern fare, artist conversations, film screenings, interactive events and more. Rather than feeling overcrowded, the weekend is designed to cultivate “personal, immersive and relaxed” experiences in the Shoals, as Rodney states.  As important as anything else to Rodney, SkyDog helps “reinforce a sense of pride in the community” by supporting all things local.  

One cannot mention Muscle Shoals without name-dropping Duane Allman. Before co-

founding the Allman Brothers, Duane spent time in Muscle Shoals as a sought-after session guitarist, lending his distinctive style to recordings that helped define the era. His extraordinary talent quickly made him a fixture in the studios, and his connection to the Shoals became an important aspect of both his own career and the broader life of southern rock. The nickname “SkyDog,” which inspires the festival’s title, was famously bestowed upon Allman and remains synonymous with his enduring legacy.

While musicians have long revered the Shoals, public fascination with the town reached new heights following the release of the acclaimed 2013 documentary Muscle Shoals. The film introduced a brand-new generation to the story of a small Alabama community whose influence stretched far beyond its size. Featuring interviews with artists including Bono, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Alicia Keys, the documentary reignited interest in the studios that helped shape modern music. For many viewers, it was the first glimpse into the deep-rooted history that unfolded along the Tennessee River. As Rodney noted, the documentary changed perceptions “locally, as well as internationally.” Before the documentary, songwriting and publishing “kept the doors open,” says Rodney, but after, “there has been a major resurgence in the recording studio business.” The Shoals is no longer a “behind-the-scenes music engine” in Rodney’s words, but truly at the “beginning of a second wave.”

Though much has come to the Shoals in the last ten to fifteen years, nothing has become as essential as the stunning Renaissance Shoals Resort & Spa in neighboring Florence. As Rodney mentions, before the Renaissance Shoals, they “struggled for decades [to put] artists up and [entertain] them.” Located close to the renowned FAME Studios, the hotel has accommodated artists coming to Alabama and, in a large way, has intertwined itself into the area’s music scene. In March of 2026, the largest public exhibition of The Rolling Stones memorabilia, CAUTION! Stones Ahead, opened in the Renaissance Hotel, featuring over 2,000 items. This is no random exhibit, as The Rolling Stones spent three days recording at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio back in 1969. The Renaissance Shoals has managed to bring luxury alongside southern hospitality to the small town, livening up the city in a grand way. As Rodney notes of Larry Bowser, the general manager of the Renaissance Shoals, “he saw the potential that a lot of locals couldn’t see.” The hotel also offers the best view of the entire area, with their uniquely spectacular 360 Grille. Very appropriately named, the restaurant slowly spins to reveal different perspectives from 300 feet above the ground, offering a new view of the town.

From the grooves of southern soul to the rock-and-roll spirit that drew musicians from around the world, SkyDog captures the magic of the town and wraps it into one musical and cultural experience. As the Shoals has grown, the introduction of venues such as the Renaissance Shoals Resort & Spa has made it, as Rodney says, “fertile” for an event like SkyDog.
