Soul, Swing & Serious Groove

Meet the Cliffnotes

In a city famous for country music, The CliffNotes have spent decades doing their own thing. Mixing soul, rhythm and blues, jazz, reggae, Latin music, and funk, the local band has built a reputation for performances that are smooth, energetic and impossible not to move to.

Led by guitarist and vocalist Cliff Richmond, The CliffNotes are not locked into one sound or one setup. Depending on the occasion, the band can perform as a smaller group for intimate clubs and private events or expand into a full band for festivals and larger venues. Cliff works with some of Nashville’s most talented musicians and vocalists, giving every performance its own personality and feel.

Cliff’s musical journey started early. Growing up in New Jersey just outside New York City, he was surrounded by great music from the start. “There was always really excellent music around,” Cliff says. “I was influenced by the terrific rhythm and blues, rock, soul and jazz bands that were everywhere.”

Over time, those influences blended naturally into his playing style. After moving to Nashville, the music evolved even more. “The sound changed and relaxed a little,” he says, “taking on a more earthy, spacious feel.”

Cliff has seen some legendary artists perform over the years, and those experiences clearly left their mark. His list of unforgettable shows includes Jimi Hendrix, The Allman Brothers, The Who, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Weather Report, Sonny Rollins, George Benson, Teddy Pendergrass, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Cliff, The Wailers and Tower of Power.

That wide range of inspiration shows up in The CliffNotes’ music. One song may lean heavily into jazz grooves while the next slides into funk, reggae or classic soul. The band’s ability to move effortlessly between styles is part of what keeps audiences engaged.

The CliffNotes have also become crowd favorites at our annual Pours & Palates event, bringing the perfect mix of energy, musicianship and fun to the evening. Their performances consistently keep guests entertained from start to finish and help create the warm, upbeat atmosphere the event is known for.

For Cliff, though, the best part of performing is much simpler than musical technique or genre. “We love spreading the joy and magic of music,” he says. “Regardless of the setting - a large, packed venue, an intimate club or event - what an honor it is to see the audience start to groove, flow, smile and relax. We all need more of that!”

That spirit may be the reason The CliffNotes have remained a fixture in the local music scene for so long. The band is less concerned with fitting into one category and more interested in creating a great atmosphere, connecting with audiences and making people feel good. And after decades of performances, they are still doing exactly that.
