Embrace Your Wellness Now, Not Your Disease Later
Here is something my career in surgery taught me: almost nothing I operated on was new. The diseased aorta, the blocked carotid, the failing kidney - none of these were emergencies in any honest sense. They were the final chapter of a story that had been writing itself, quietly and preventably, for twenty or thirty years while nobody was reading it.
One patient with years of unchecked diabetes made it undeniable. By the time I met him, we weren’t preventing anything. We were retreating, amputation by amputation, chasing damage that had been entirely avoidable twenty years earlier. I wasn’t treating a disease. I was collecting the interest on two decades of neglect no one had been positioned to interrupt.
Then it happened to me. I was thirty-five, out of residency, and I didn’t feel like myself - energy gone by the afternoon, sleep broken, focus slipping. I’d lost vitality and function, and I was young. And I knew exactly what a regular doctor’s office would offer: you work too much, maybe you’re depressed. That was the entire toolbox.
Meanwhile, my sixty-five-year-old patients all carried the same belief - that by showing up and doing what they’d been told, they were buying a long, healthy life. It was nearly the opposite. They were arriving at their later years without the tools to live them well.
I want to be fair about this, because it’s not an attack - it’s just true. The medical system you’ve been taught to rely on is very good at what it was built to do. It can set a broken arm. It can take out an inflamed appendix. It can get you through a heart attack. When something breaks, that system will save your life, and thank God for it.
But it does not do vitality. There is no room in a fifteen-minute insurance visit for the conversation about how you actually age. Longevity is not on the menu and never was. If you go looking for it in a traditional doctor’s office, you won’t find it - not because anyone is hiding it, but because you’re at the wrong address.
And it matters, because I’m not interested in simply having more years. I want more functional years. I’d rather stay a force of nature and go out at seventy hang gliding into the side of a mountain than reach eighty-five having spent the last fifteen years in a chair, shuttling between appointments. I don’t want to come across home plate in a casket. I want to come across it sideways, on the motorcycle, in a cloud of dust and fire - a force in my relationships, my business, my marriage, my own two hands, right up until my body gives out.
That doesn’t happen by accident. It has to be built: real diagnostics that map where your body is actually headed, not where the average American is. Early intervention, while there’s still everything to protect. And a standing relationship with a physician who knows your trajectory well enough to catch it the moment it changes.
I spent years at the far end of the timeline, holding stiff, calcified vessels in my hand - feeling what a lifetime of unchecked inflammation does to a body. I left to meet people at the beginning of the story instead. That’s why I built Aeterna Club: a private, physician-led longevity practice, deliberately capped at seventy-five members. It’s for people who have advisors for their wealth, taxes, and legacy - but no one to engineer their health.
The default is already being chosen for you, quietly. The other choice is a conversation.
